This may be a stupid question, but I really have no clue. So please do not be rude. But, what kind of string is used? the most common? is it just DMC embroidery floss?

Is it possible for anyone to make Alpha pattern A1232 into a normal pattern with less strings? Because I just can't do 20 strings, I got too confused.. thanks.
