i have some confusion... by luhos 14 years ago

hello, i am new to making friendship bracelets after i saw some people doing it and i have some confusion in reading the patterns... i tried to start out by making this basic pattern:
https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/1
but i did some rows (maybe 20 or so) and it didn't seem to be working properly. i was not sure if i was tying incorrectly or not. i tried to look up some videos to see if my technique was incorrect and so i found this tutorial: https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/tutorial.php?id=12 which is the same bracelet

my problem is that in the pattern, you tie two strings next to each other together but then in the tutorial they use the first string and send it all the way across. is this correct??? is there two ways to make the pattern??? maybe i am just not very good as it is coming out patchy and with no pattern at all. any help or guidance would be great, thank you!

Yes, for the stripe, most people would take a thread and knot it onto each thread all the way across.

More complicated patterns do need to be knotted row by row, but with patterns with large quantites of diagonals, like the stripe and chevron (#1 and #2), it is easier to keep using a thread once you have picked it up and keep knotting across. I would follow the tutorial for this one.

My confusion is that I don't know how to read the pattern.. I don't know how many knots to do or the direction, I don't rely on videos because they go way too fast.

What kind of pattern are you interested in doing? pick something and I'll see if I can help explain.

Here is a tutorial for a bracelet that doesn't use video, maybe that will help. https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/tutorial.php?id=14
