I'm really new using steffe patterns and i don't understand how to do knots. I'm used to forward and backward knote. WHen i try to to half-stitches and the other kind they don't turn into a know, it's just like i twisted a string around the other. please help :)

did u check the learn page but if u did that and still dont understand maybe u didnt pull the thread through all the way under the one thread

I think you mean the backword-forward knot (<, symbol in the pattern) and the forward-backward (>) knot. I'll try to explain it.

If you make a forward knot, you make 2 knot to the right. And you do the same with backword knots, but then to the left. If you make a backward-forward knot (<), you make one knot to the right, and one knot to the left.
When you make a forward-backward knot (>), you make one knot to the left and right.
