Rissa, it's so expensive in the United Kingdom too. Around £1/$1.70 per skein for DMC. I wanted to order from Jann Lynn but their international delivery is horrific, but it's free in the US. If you have any friends there they may do what mine did when you need new thread.

I ordered it and had it delivered to her in Texas, she sent it on to me for a fifth of Jann Lynn's delivery charge. Plus it took twice as long to be delivered in the US as it did to cross the Atlantic. Go figure.

Although it's admittedly not the highest quality, I've never had problems with it breaking; for most of my uses, it's perfectly fine.
