Tutorial for a Macrame Loop Closure for Alpha Patterns

I've had many people ask how I create this loop for my alpha pattern bracelets, keychains and bookmarks. Here is a step by step picture tutorial I've created to answer those questions. Please feel free to share, but let your friends know that you got it from MichelleMadeMoments.

I'm using 12 strings for this tutorial. You can use as many strings as you want, but they have to be an even amount to start.

Step 1: Cut six, 15 inch lengths of string.

Step 2: Hold one string out.

Step 3: Fold the group of five strings in half (making ten strings with the loop at the top).

Step 4: Fold over the single string and loop it through the five-string loop in a Lark's Head knot.

Step 5: Separate the strings (six strings to the left and six strings to the right).

Step 6: I use a clip and a board to keep my strings steady and separate. Clip the six strings down over the board just above the Lark's Head knot.

Step 7: Make alternating Lark's Head knots over the group of strings. The more knots you make, the bigger the loop will be. (For a smaller bracelet, use fewer knots. For this bracelet, I used eight knots on each side.)

Step 8: Take one string out of the group and tie it in a right-hand knot over the group of four strings.

Step 9: Take the next string out of the group and tie it in a right-hand knot over the group of three strings.

Step 10: Take another string out of the group and tie it in a right-hand knot over the group of two strings.

Step 11: Take the next string out of the two that are left and tie it in a right-hand knot over the last string.

Step 12: Unclip all the strings from the board and repeat steps 8-11 on the other side.

Step 13: Fold over the unfinished loop, separating the last two strings from the rest.

Step 14: Make a right-hand knot with the last two strings to connect the loop. (I find it easier to tie this knot if you squeeze the loop tightly and clip it to the board securely.)

Step 15: Clip the loop sideways to the board.

Step 16: Separate the middle two strings away from the five strings on the right.

Step 17: Separate the far right string from the group.

Step 18: With the far right string, tie left-hand knots over the four strings to the left.

Step 19: Separate the last two strings you just tied away from the rest.

Step 20: Repeat step 17

Step 21: With the far right string, tie left-hand knots over the two strings to the left.

Step 22: Unclip your loop and tilt to the left side.

Step 23: Separate the middle two strings away from the five strings on the left.

Step 24: Separate the far left string from the group.

Step 25: With the far left string, tie right-hand knots over the four strings to the right.

Step 26: Separate the last two strings you just tied away from the rest.

Step 27: Repeat step 24.

Step 28: With the far left string, tie right-hand knots over the two strings to the right.

Step 29: Clip the loop flat and make sure the middle two strings are pulled tight.

Step 30: Choose the first string you will use for the Alpha pattern of your choice.

Step 31: Start your Alpha knotting. (I knot my Alphas from left to right.)

Step 32: If your Alpha pattern has an uneven number of strings, simply count the middle two strings as one and tie your working Alpha string over both.

Step 33: I cut the extra string from the middle two that are tied together, so I don't accidentally tie an extra knot and mess up the pattern. DO THIS ONLY IF YOUR ALPHA PATTERN USES AN UNEVEN NUMBER OF STRINGS.

Step 34: Continue your Alpha pattern and finish it the way you choose.
