Introduction

This tutorial was inspired by a photo I saw someone post on here. I saw a bracelet I haven't made since I was 13 so I thought I'd share it with you guys and give it a go.

I must stress that this bracelet is easier than it looks, but it WILL take some getting used to. This bracelet only uses forward and backward knots. Right, let's hop to it.

Materials and Set Up

For this bracelet I am going to use 8 strings of 4 colours. For this tutorial/pics I will be using dark blue, blue, yellow and purple.

To start this bracelet you want your strings set out as
1234 1234 or if it's easier:
db, b, y, p, db, b, y, p like in the photo below, picture

Step by Step

Now I said this bracelet uses normal forward and backward knots for the first 2 rows, but you're not carrying the string over. So effectively you're seeing the back of the normal bracelet. This will give the flatten effect of the bracelet all the way through and the 3rd row will give the bracelet an effect of raised lines. I will do this step by step with photo's and there's a video too, so you can see it.

Step 1

Starting from the right side of your strings you want to take the purple and make a backward knot over the yellow, see picture

Step 2

(The important bit)

Normally you would move the purple so it was on the left side of the yellow .....do not do this, instead leave the purple on the right side of the yellow, like picture

Step 3

Now you want to take your yellow on the right hand side and make a backwards knot over the blue and as before with the purple move it back to the right side of the blue. See picture and

Repeat this with the next string: Picture 6-7: Knot blue over dark blue and return blue to the right of dark blue.

Step 4

Picture :You want to carry on doing this all the way to the left side of the bracelet. Notice here: It might look wrong but trust me, if you can see the reverse side of the knot you're doing it correct.

Now your string order should still be: db, b, y, p, db, b, y, p. You should be able to see the back side of the knot.

Step 5

Now we're going to work from the left back up, so take your dark blue on the lefthand-side and make a forward knot over the blue, picture . Like we did before on the right: You don't want the dark blue over to the right of the blue. Instead, leave it on the left. See picture 10

Step 6

Now take your blue string on the left side and make a forward knot over the yellow, picture 11. Again, leaving it on the lefthand side of the yellow, picture 12

Step 7

You want to carry on doing this with the rest of the strings, all the way to the right side of the bracelet, picture 13. Now your string order should still be: db, b, y, p, db, b, y, p

Step 8

Ok, now the easy bit. See picture 14. Starting back on the right hand side, you want to take your purple and make a backward knot over all the strings until it's on the left side of the bracelet. Just like if you're doing a row of a candy stripe bracelet. This row of purple will give the bracelet a raised line. Not only can you see it, but you can feel it's raised too. Now your string order should be: p, db, b, y, p, db, b, y.

Step 9

And you simply go back to step 1 and repeat until you have the desired length you need :)

You probably can do this from left to right instead but again, I learnt how to make it this way when I was 12. Hope you enjoyed this bracelet. I haven't made one of these in 16 years! Crazy eh? lol

Here is a video explaining this, if the pictures are hard to understand.
