Bracelet looking odd - tips on knot tightness by Mlaetitia 5 years ago

Hi all,

I have been making macrame bracelets and necklaces and wanted to try these patterns - they are amazing!! So i started with https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/pattern.php?id=37185 and the side where i am making the knots looks good but when i flip it over it looks not good : https://ibb.co/cJfD7f
https://ibb.co/jaz6Sf

I am guessing it has to do with how tight the knots are or arent.. I am using linhasita waxed cord but when i get to start a new pattern line it looks like the knots got loose...

Any tips or help are welcome :)

This looks pretty good to me! Only the right side is a little wonkey, so that needs some more attention. It is always about the right tension.
The backside will look messy in a lot of patterns. That is because of the forward backward- and backward forward-knots. That is normal.
Waxed polyester cord is harder to handle than cotton, because it is slippery due to the wax, but a lot of people make very nice friendshipbracelets using waxed cord, so it is mainly a matter of getting used to the material :-) Friendshipbracelets are harder with waxed cord than other macrame though, because all knots need to be really close together.

Hi Mlaetitia,
it is normal that the bracelet only looks good on the front side and a bit untidy on the back side, especially with waxed cord. It is not easy to knot with waxed cord and for that your front side looks really good, I would suggest just wear it with the front side up and nobody sees the backside :-)

It's not just the wax that makes a difference, but also fact that the cord is composed of two relatively large plies rather than the 6 smaller strands in embroidery floss.

As you loop one cord tightly against the other, the individual plies really stand out, and can interfere with pulling or tightening the knots. You can see the same effect with pearl cotton thread which is not waxed.

With embroidery floss, the individual strands fit (and flex) more smoothly together to present a solid texture on both sides of the bracelet.

It's all about what kind of look you want to achieve, and becoming familiar with the material.
