Waterproofing by kirstieleigh23 7 years ago

Hey everyone

I need some help. I have made a bracelet for a friend and she wears it all the time. Unfortuntely, because she is a gym instructor she sweats a lot and she said the bracelet is now falling apart. Does anyone have any tips on how to waterproof the bracelet so it wont fall apart so quickly. I am going to be making her another one which I hope will last longer.

I was going to try waterproof spray but I want to make sure that it is safe to use on cotton, and in constant contact with skin.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi. I am not sure, but I think your best option would be to use a better material.
There's a cord known as Settanyl from Brazil that is used by several companies (cough*PuraVida*cough) that specialize in "friendship bracelets". You can use all the same patterns and the material, while very different, is also roughly 1mm in diameter.
The best (and possibly only) vendor of this cord in the US is Knot More and I think their site is knotmore.com
Settanyl is waterproof and fade-resistant, and PV specializes in bracelets for surfers and beach-going people. They have a ton of excellent reviews, so they're doing something right.
The 'worst' part about this cord is the pricing. You can buy small bobbins to try them out, or to expand your colors, for fairly cheap, but the full spools cost almost $10 each. They're worth it, though!

I agree, using polyester or nylon would be a better choice than trying to make cotton waterproof.
Linhasita is another brand of waxed polyester, which is used a lot for macrame. C-Lon, S-Lon or omega are nylon cords that can be used too.
