Harder patterns by Celtic_Knot 7 years ago

I want to work my way up to harder patterns with more strings. The highest number of strings I've used is 8. I tried a 10 string pattern once but got frustrated. But I was still new at the time with bracelet making.

Even some seemingly easy patterns give me trouble sometimes which in turn makes me frustrated( I didn't have a good day yesterday so maybe that affected my crafting...)

When I make a mistake I start over on the bracelet. I've made some bracelets from patterns and they've turned out well. On the longer patterns when there is more than one string of the same side by side I get confused in which string goes in what direction. I have to trace the path of the string to see which one I am supposed to use next. Then the knots get twisted or I lose my place and I scrap the bracelet. How can I solve this? To keep track of which row is I am on I use a sticky note.

Does anyone have advice? I'll post pics of finished bracelets!

What I always do is take the strings between my fingers, close to the knotted part, and move my fingers down the strings. Usually they will automatically be at the right order when I do that.
Or in other words: The strings will choose their own right place, just because the knots are flat (not twisted) by themselves. Only when you make forward-backward- or backward-forward-knots the strings tend to be a bit more curved, but if you have two strings in the same colors that'll not be the knot you made :-)

Also: Try the knotting-in-sections. It's faster and it's easier to follow patterns that way. And easier to find the right strings too :-)

The patterns are also different in their difficulty; have a look at the difficulty-numbers in the pattern section and try to start with the easier ones.; the lower the number the easier the pattern..

Here's an example:
#92665 - difficulty: 3.3
#94056 - difficulty: 5.0

Knotting in sections? Like going from left to right or up and down? What did you mean regarding strings of the same color?

We have a few tutorials about knotting in sections, like this one
Basically you're knotting in diagonal lines instead of in horizontal lines/rows. You're knotting section after section, instead row after row.

If you make a knot with two strings of the same color it doesn't matter what knot you use, so a plain forward or backward knot is what you would use.

I've been doing all my bracelets horizontal in rows. Have I been doing it wrong? If so is it easy to learn to tie another way?

I knot my patterns in rows. :) It's not wrong- though some people prefer doing it in sections.
The knots are the same, it's just the order in which they are tied (in sections, or row by row).

Ok. I like the tutorial. If you want it go faster than I guess knot in sections diagonally. Would knotting diagonally in section if the pattern isn't like the one shown in the tutorial?

When I started knotting patterns I started row-by-row too. I changed to knotting in sections after about three months and I never changed back to row-by-row. Only 1212-patterns (only fb- and bf-knots) are not really good for the section-knotting, but I still would knot those diagonally instead of row-by-row. For me, that's just easier and faster. But, as Allison said, it's a personal choice, there's no good way or wrong way.

With knotting in sections does it matter if the knots in the pattern doesn't go diagonally? Hard to explain so would it be possible to post a pic of the pattern I am working on? Is uploading pics only for finished work?
