left hand knotting by silver_twilight 7 years ago

I am fairly new to making pattern bracelets. I have been making 1 knot bracelets for years and I wanted to try other types. After watching a few tutorials on the 4 basic knots I see that my knotting is backwards. Instead of folding my string OVER the other string, I fold it under. doing a knot by going under instead of over is natural for my hands. I am having a real problem changing the way I hold the string. I think part of the problem is being left- handed.
Is there a way to follow a pattern with out changing my natural rhythm of knotting?

As long as the knot is right it doesn't matter how you make it. If you practice enough on making it in a different way, I'm sure you'll get it right.

Yes, as Kleinevos said, it is all about practice. I've realized that I'm ambidextrous when it comes to knotting, so you just have to keep practicing! You can help yourself by watching video tutorials, however, you'll realize that everyone makes their knots in a different way, bit the result is always the same. Keep knotting, don't be afraid to make mistakes on your bracelets, that's what practicing is aboit, I bet we all started with similar problems. You'll find out your own way to knot the four different knots :)

For me, I'm better at knotting with my left hand (and I'm right handed). Just this past year I've learned to do all my knots with my left hand rather than switching. If it's easier for you to do it under, then do it that way. :) Once you have more practice, you'll figure out what positions are best for you.

thank you! I I know making a pattern from right to left works better for my style of knotting. i am going to experiment with some easy patterns and colors and see what I get.

The only "problem" with tying the knots "under" instead of "over" is that you might be tying the knots "upside down" so that the top face and bottom face of the bracelet are reversed.
For me after I have tied the first half of a knot (either forward or backward) the string that I knotted with is coming up out of the top face bracelet. When I tie the second half of the knot, the two strings will be side by side again. If you find that by going under when you tie your knotted string is coming out of the bottom of the bracelet instead of the top, then you are in effect tying the bracelet upside down.
There is some controversy about which side of the bracelet is supposed to be the visible side (the fashion side) and which is supposed to be the hidden side (next to your skin) when you wear it. It is largely a matter of taste and convention.
Many of the designs on this site are symmetrical across the width of the bracelet, so if you consistently tie it upside down, then you can flip the bracelet over when you are done if you want to.
Tying knots "upside down" is a technique I want to explore because of the potential of adding texture variation into a bracelet design.

EdBlair, when I do that (let's say I'm making a backwards knot), I bring the right string over top to the left side and do two underhand knots with it. :) That fixes the problem. That way the "proper" side is up.
