Macrame pouch selling? by purpLhaze 7 years ago

So I've been making macrame pouches, if you're not sure what that is there's a tutorial on the site for it. A few people have seen what I've been making and have asked me what I would charge for something like this and I honestly don't know what to tell them. The materials don't really cost that much and I can have one pouch done inside of two weeks but if I charged based on those things I would either be selling myself short or end up charging a ridiculous price. I guess I just need some opinions on what to charge to be fair to myself and also potential buyers. Sorry it's so long... Thanks for reading. :)

That's always a problem, because I feel most people don't really want to pay what it's worth. They probably don't know how much effort it takes. You should never only charge material costs, because you've spend a lot of time making it! If you don't charge enough, someone else also can't charge a decent price. That's the same with bracelets. If you can get them at the market for a few bucks, no one will buy if you charge 20 bucks or more .....

I would probably sell these pouches for at least 50 or 60 euros, depending on the size ofcourse. Or at least about 3 or 4 euros per hour, but that would most likely be quite expensive. It'll always be much less than a normal hourly payment :-(

I've ran into that problem too and I live in the United States so nobody wants to pay for anything period. I've thought about using the minimum wage as base pay for my projects but that would be far too expensive. Some people think I should charge 20 dollars and some think 100 dollars. I feel like somewhere in between would be fair to all involved.

^If people are willing to pay $100 that's awesome! :o I would definitely make it more than $20... maybe closer to $70-$100. It just depends on how much the people interested are willing to pay for the pouches. They do take time to make. Do you know how much time it took you to make one?

I keep trying to time myself but I also keep forgetting to set a timer so the best answer I can give at the moment for that is several hours lol but I can be done with one within two weeks but thats if I'm not busy with my actual job if I could figure away to sell my stuff on a consistent basis this is all I would do

I usually forget to time myself when I'm just doing the mandalas flower (and turning it into a bracelet) and people ask me and I say, I can finish it in a day, but it would take at least two-three hours. Sometimes cutting the string and choosing a pattern can take the most time!

I know! It takes for ever to pick a pattern and the right colors so I just start planning my next project as I'm finishing my current one but it's ok... Art takes time especially this kind of art lol :)

I would say anywhere between $10-$15. I feel that is a fair price for the labor and the string when it comes to projects. It depends on how many strings it is and how long it takes you. People who have bought from me thought it was a fair price for something like that. Then almost all of my bracelets are $5. Anything under 24 strings is $5 to make it easier on myself. Anything higher, I add a dollar per string since it takes longer to make them (for me anyways) and I use longer strings. I find the bigger the bracelet, the more string length required.

I don't think that are fair prices though, Nelipot.... You can calculate what you earn per hour and that's far from fair, at least for my country or for the US. I know it's not the same in every country of the world, but minimum wage is much higher than your prices!

Yeah I agree with Kelinevos, I would never sell a pouch for only $10-$15.
