Hello there kat606. I'm afraid with alpha bracelets, you need to have the required amount of strings to get the complete picture on the bracelet unless you can experiment yourself with creating a smaller version of a picture you like.
Me first starting out did not go all that great but I practiced a few more and got better at it. There's always more room for improving, so don't worry about it. You will get the hang of it eventually and will be much easier.
Should you need more help, feel free to ask :)

Are you looking at alpha or normal patterns? If alpha I suggest you search alpha pattern tutorials, that might help you. Alpha patterns you have "base strings" that you knot on but don't actually use to knot and a background string which is a colour that you use for the background (it is usually the most used colour) and you add extra colours as they are needed. If it is a normal pattern its just like smaller bracelets except you have more strings. Maybe try a simpler pattern first so you get the technique then try the big pattern. Hope this helps :)

Sorry I didn't see your comment KnotterHolic, it must have been an overlap :)

Don't be Jazzy5252. The more, the merrier

Our tutorial is here. And I would also never start out with a big pattern with many colors.
Try to get the hang of it with smaller patterns and 2 or 3 colors max before you start big ones. Alphas can be very tricky at first. It will get better if you keep trying though :-)

so if im right alpha is when i use one long string for the background and tie knots all the way across then do backwards knots all across and stick to that pattern right? un till u have to add the colurd knots right? but mine had so many strings that wasnt working i even did the special loop at the top to begin.

That's right. Your base strings will always stay the same number as that is what is required by the pattern. Yes, with adding the colored knots, your string count will definitely increase depending on how many color add on's the pattern asks for. The loops have nothing to do with your string count unless you are joining them in with the bracelet. All I can think off is why you might be having more strings than wanted:
1. If you are creating a loop, make the loop and cut off the excess string. OR If you do plan to join the loop strings to your bracelet, make sure they add up to the correct number of strings as given in your desired pattern. Don't join in the loop strings and then count the other 2 additional strings from the pattern. The loop strings substitute for those IF you plan to use your loop strings in the bracelet. And these strings are your base strings that will always stay intact. Best to add another string for weaving through it.
2. Make sure that you don't add your "color add on's" or your background/ weaving thread to your base strings. Once you use one, you put that away and pick up the next. Your base string always stays intact and you always knot onto the base strings[/] as opposed to using them to knot.
If you're following it correctly, you won't go wrong with these bracelets.
Also, there's a tutorial on here that shows you how to start your bracelets with a straight row. If you scroll down, it shows you a way on how to do it with alpha's. Just additional suggestions for your knowledge so as to as get a much clearer idea.
[b]Straight beginning row

I do hope this helps and wish you good luck. Don't worry too much about it as you will get better at it with practice, I promise. Watch a couple of videos on them, try out simple patterns to get the hang of it and experiment further when you get more comfortable with them.

That's right.
It shouldn't make any difference how many strings the pattern has, it always 'works'. It only takes a lot more time if you have lots of base-strings. And it takes practice to knot it nice and straight.
