Thread Strand:Braid Gauge by MaggieLee 8 years ago

Hi there, I've been using this site for a few weeks now, but I had a question so I went ahead and signed up!

Anyways, regarding kumihimo, I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a sort of "conversion," calculating how large of a gauge "x" number of threads are.

For example, a kumihimo braid using 12 strands of standard embroidery floss is about 6mm in diameter. I'm hoping that someone has made enough braids in different sizes and they could make a conversion.

My reason for asking is that I want to take a shot at a 40 thread braid, but I have absolutely no idea how thick it is going to be. I would like to know so that I can search for the proper finding in the correct size before I start. Does anyone know? This is the one I am interested in doing.

Thank you for your time.
Maggie

Hi :)
I can't tell you how thick the kumihimo will be, but you can take a look at other 40 strings kumihimos on the site.
For this, just go to the kumihimo patterns, and put the following settings: strings: from 40 to 40 and tick only patterns with photos
Then you can click on any pattern and watch the pictures to have an idea of how thick your bracelet will be.

And I think that if nobody ever made conversions, it's just because we don't use the same strings and there is no "normal" strings, it depends on the country and the brands sold there ;)

I've made many kumihimos and ,for example, K552 has 40 strings. I've used DMC Petra size 5 for that one and it's about 7 mm thick. Size 5 is the same size as regular floss.

I always use thicker strings for kumihimos with less strings, which means that about all of my kumis are 6-9 mm thick.
Up to about 16 or 20 strings I use yarn like Catania( for 8 strings doubled ), up to about 28 or 32 strings I use yarn like Catania fine (which is about size 3), up to 40 strings I use floss or the size 5 Petra.

I hope this helps :-(
