Keychains - Help by SweetMeets 9 years ago

Hello E1!

I got some D-rings in order to make keychains but I can't figure out the proper way to set-up the strings for normal type patterns since I still don't know how to do alphas :(

When you use lark's head knots to start your keychain don't you always end up with 2 strings per each lark's head knot?? I want to set the strings up according to patterns, but the lark's head knot leaves me with 2 (TWO) strings.

Please tell me how do I set up single or individual strings for a keychain? It seems like the answer is right there but I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. LOL

Anyhow, I'd love to hear ALL your advice and suggestions! Many Thanks! :o)

What pattern are you trying to do? Depending on how the colors in the pattern are arranged, you can probably get the larks head knots to work.

You could, for instance, tie the larks head knot using two strings in parallel to make a knot with 4 strings. the middle strings would be one color and the outer strings would be the other color.

Also you don't have to start knotting the pattern on row 1. Maybe there is another row in the pattern that is easier to set up the larks head knots for.

And finally, you can often make adjustments to the knots in the first row (that you actually knot).
For example, if the knot in a particular place on the first row is a forward knot where the strings change position, but when you set up the larks head knots, you have strings that are already swapped: Tie a backward-forwards knot instead so that the knot is the correct color, and the strings come out the bottom of the knot in the correct order.

Have a look here. This tutorial shows part of what EdBlair said. For a single string you could try to put one end through the other larks head knots and cut that end short.
When the starting-order is more complicated you could maybe try something similar to the straight start, alternative way. In that case you need to include the D-ring inside the starting row.

@EdBlair & @kleinevos Thank you both so very much for your terrific responses to my plea for help. First, I must give you my apologies for taking so long to reply, I've got some crazy computer problems going on.

I did make an attempt to make a keychain but about a third of the way through I saw how horrible it was looking and I decided to rip it all out. I should have mentioned that the patterns I have in mind are all pretty much 1212 patterns. Can I make keychains with a 1212 pattern?

@EdBlair The patterns I am trying do are 5523, 63236, 50783, 68059, 45528, 5319, and/or 54698. Your advice was extremely insightful and helpful. Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful knowledge with me! :)

@kleinevos The tutorials you recommended were awesome and very helpful. I have them bookmarked them cause their so useful. Many thanks for the great suggestions! :)

Whoops, I made a mistake. It's not 54698, it's pattern 2982 that I want to make.

I think you can do as EdBlair said:
Take blue and yellow , as an example(#5523), and make a larkshead-knot with one color inside the other. That'll make ABBA. Repeat that, and adjust the knots in the first row to change the order of strings into ABAB etc.
For adding one single string, like the red: make a half larkshead knot and put one end of the string through the blue and yellow larksheadknots.

@kleinevos - Thanks, I will definitely try that after I finish the bracelet I'm working on. I appreciate all the help you've given me. Thanks again! :o)
