Value packs of floss -- bad quality? by All4Knot 9 years ago

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the "value packs" of floss you sometimes find at craft stores, Walmart, Amazon, etc. I saw a review somewhere that said that the colors bleed when they get wet. Just wanted to hear others' experiences. Thanks in advance!

I have bought several of those packs and i have never had an issue with them bleeding. The only thing I've explained is with the DMC prisim brand is that can break easily.

I have bought packs of Iris thread at Jo-Ann. The thread is not a good a DMC but I don't think I have had any problems. The pack has some really nice colors and multiple of each color. I have also got packs of some thread called loops and threads its not horrible but its is the lowest quality thread I have ( I have DMC, Iris, and Loops and threads). It also has some very nice colors and multiple of each color.

This has never been a problem for me, but I have had the threads break on me with DMC Prism.
I really like Iris and Loops and Threads.
Hope that helps!

It's hard to say in a general way about quality of threads, as some value packs are fine and others are less so.

I have never had a problem with the value packs I've bought. I use 'Prism' all the time and they are colour fast and never break when I use them.

A good tip for colour fastness is borrowed from the embroidery world:

Run the skein of thread under hot water, then pat it dry with a towel and then leave it to dry completely. This will get excess dye off and will mean the colours are less likely to bleed later when they are in a project.

A good way to get cheap threads is to look for wholesale packs of embroidery thread, a large pack all of one colour (you can get them online, Amazon, eBay etc.). They are cheap because they are a large lot, not because they are poor quality.

You have to think about economy of scale too - sometimes you'll save money, but the quality is no good - so spending a little extra might get you a better quality thread and bracelet in the long term.

When I was shopping on Amazon (about a year+ ago) I found that you had to read the descriptions, and the reviews, carefully because some of the color packs did not have full 8m skeins of each color. So what looked like a big bargain turned out to not be all that great.
