different types of thread/embroidery floss by ambg 9 years ago

hey guys,

so ive been making bracelets on and off for a while but recently I've been wanting to get more into it. I have been wondering what floss to use because i come across 2 kinds: the one that has a million colors and is glossy (its just a bunch of strings that make up one thread) and another that is braided so the ends are as loose as the first. *sorry i don't know the names of these two

so i was wondering which one you guys prefer/ use and if you use the glossier ones how do you make them so perfectly!?i find that when i use it i cannot get the knots to tighten like i can using the braided kind. Its just the braided kind 1. isn't as durable 2. doesn't look as good 3. the threads starts getting hairy towards the end of the bracelet

are there any threads i can use that are a mix of both?

thanks in advance

Ive used both cotton cord and regular cotton floss( like dmc brand). Honestly it depends alot on the brand of stibg. Some is made better than others. I have a few cord colors that never fry or break and then there are a few colors I have that always break. Same with the floss strand.

If your braided string looks like this ---? http://www.amazon.com/Iris-Craft-Thread-Super-150-Pack/dp/B002WI88XO , then it's what's called craft thread. I prefer embroidery floss (DMC, J.P. Coats, etc.) myself, because I've tried the Iris string shown in the link above and it was weirdly stretchy and my patterns would get all warped no matter the tension I applied. I think you might find the compromise you're looking for with pearl cotton: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Darts-crafts&field-keywords=dmc%20pearl%20cotton . It's a string used for crocheting. Size 5 is about the same width as embroidery floss. A lot of people here work with that and seem to like it.

In fact, I should have linked you to this tutorial on string types instead of rambling on and on! https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/tutorial.php?id=95
