Hello! First Time Making a Bracelet! Advice, please? by ladypants 11 years ago

Hi everyone, this will be my first time making a bracelet to completion.

About 8 years ago I got about half way through making a beautiful complex bracelet, but ended up turning it into a keychain.

I've forgotten how to do a lot of things, but I know I can pick it up easily if I'm given a little nudge.

My main issue lies in that I want to make some bracelets like this:

https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/alpha_pattern.php?id=37453
https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/alpha_pattern.php?id=36583

But with that many rows and all those different colors I don't know which string should go where or how long ANY of the strings should be!

Could someone please help me out? I have everything I need to get started except an idea of where to start.

Thanks!

Have you tried looking at the alpha tutorial? It can help you with basic alphas and there should be a link to multicolored ones, as well. However, it may be easier to start with some easier patterns with only two colors before you tackle multicolored ones. The two-color tutorial is found here:

If you have any more questions after looking at that, I'd be happy to help :)

I understand tying fks, bks, and downward knots. The main problem I have is with choosing base strings and estimating their lengths.

Should I include ALL colors as base strings and just make them extra long? Or should I just make the background color as base strings and add the other colors into the bracelet?

I would start off with simpler patterns first. Just remember to be patient.
