Down arrow? What kind of knot is that? by accebera818 13 years ago

I was looking at the Alpha patterns and I clicked on one that was a spider design. (https://www.friendship-bracelets.net/alpha_pattern.php?id=40)

In the Arrow Alpha Generator Image it has arrows pointing left and right (signifying forward or backward knots)
I noticed that there are "Down Arrows" and I have no idea what they are!

Please help!

Down arrows just mean do the opposite knot of what you're doing for the letter color. So if you're doing fk for the background color, the downward knots mean do the opposite which means do a bk for the letter color

The term "alpha pattern" was chosen when it was first discovered that the style can be used very well for letters. When more and more picture patterns have been created the style was still named the same.

Don't get irritated with the name.
There are two styles of knotting, the standard way (diagonally), with the sub-type 1212-patterns (pictures and names knotted diagonally) and the alpha-style which is knotted horizontally.

So with alpha patterns you (normally) have two colors: The background string which is one very long string and several shorter pattern strings.
When you start knotting you use the background string to go right in the first row and left (backwards) in the second row.
Whenever you need to use the pattern strings you need to take this string to knot over the background string. To demonstrate this the down arrow is used.
When your background string moves from left to right (forward knots) you have to do a bk over the background string. If your background string is moving from right to left you have to make an fk over it. That's it.
